My philosophy about baseball can be best summed up by Yogi Berra who once said: "Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical."
While Yogi might have gotten his math wrong, his sentiment is absolutely right. The game is less about physical talent and more about attitude, and character, and effort. That's been my approach to coaching the last five years as I watched my son Jake make his way up through CapCity to the major league Yankees and now as I help out with my daughter's team, the Titans.
I have both contributed to and benefited from my involvement with CapCity. It has been a wonderfully rewarding experience as I participated in every possible way as a parent, volunteer, and ultimately head coach. I was one of the original rebels who joined with many on the current board to take back ownership of the organization in order to improve the experience for the kids. It has been great to see the progress that the Board has made in growing the program, in improving the fields, in raising the level of coaching, and in focusing importantly on fun. I'd now like to join the board to maintain that momentum and take our leagues to the next level.
As Yogi also said, "In baseball, you don't know nothing". It was his way of showing his respect and humility for the game. It's a good lesson for our kids and one I'll bring to the board as I've always taught it on the field.
